1-2 Bajo
3-5 Moderado
6-7 Alto
8-10 Muy Alto
11+ Extremo
Algunos de los males que puede causar la exposición extrema a los rayos ultravioleta son: cáncer de piel, insolación, envejecimiento prematuro de la piel y daños a los ojos. Para protegerse de un nivel extremo se recomienda evitar el sol durante las horas 10AM - 2PM porque el índice solar promedio en Puerto Rico durante esas horas es de 11 y algunos días ha llegado hasta 13.
Ahora bien, es importante cuestionarse si se esta tomando medidas necesarias para proteger a los niños cuando juegan su deporte favorito bajo el sol. Algunas de las medidas que se puede aplicar fácilmente son: el bloqueador solar y usar ropa que proteja contra el sol. De utilizar un bloqueador solar es preferible que sea de spf 50 para arriba. 
Entre los artículos de ropa que se puede incorporar para proteger a los niños del sol esta el uso de tricotas y mangas de compresión. Es muy importante no dejar de proteger a los niños al ver que ellos no se quejan del sol porque sus ganas de jugar y divertirse van mas allá que cualquier sentimiento de ardor en su piel.
