Many people in the world of sports have heard the phrase " If you look good, you play good" . Some others repeat it and take it as a right statement but most of them are not sure if this is really true or what is the logic behind it. Let's look at some facts that might suggest that this might be true .
First, we should have in mind some parts of the body and brain, their function and how they affect performance and moods. Neurons are a type of of cell from the nervous system which function is to communicate with other cells by transmitting nerve impulses. Basically, neurotransmitters are the ones that make possible the transmit of messages between neurons for our body to execute either with a movement or a emotional reaction.
The neurotransmitter that has an effect on the persons mood is the serotonin. Serotonin is closely linked to self esteem, concentration and mental relaxation. Imagine if all these could be controlled by each person at the time of competition. It could be constant magic when competing. Positive self-talk and uplifting thoughts can promote serotonin synthesis while decreasing the stress hormone cortisol. This means that if you look yourself in the mirror and can think and affirm that you look good it could positively affect your serotonin levels.
Now, the level at what you perform doesn't have to do exclusively with how you look, there are certainly other factors that influence. However we can assure that they way you look will influence what you think of yourself and in turn this could affect either positively or negatively the level at which you perform.
